If you’re looking for a place where a life and legacy can be honored with dignity and creativity, consider Lakewood.

Located in the heart of south Minneapolis, Lakewood is one of the most distinguished and progressive cemeteries in the nation—renowned for its history, art, and natural beauty. As a nonprofit serving families for 150+ years, Lakewood is committing to making meaningful memorialization available to all. We offer a wide range of possibilities designed to give you choice about how and where you or a loved one would like to be remembered.

We invite you to reach out to us to share your wishes, preferences and budget so that we can help you explore what suits you best.

Why choose Lakewood?

  • We are a nonprofit organization committed to offering a range of accessible and exceptional options—with extraordinary respect and care.
  • We offer a variety of traditional and unique places and ways for you to honor and remember your loved one—or be remembered at Lakewood.
  • Our cremation and burial costs are surprisingly affordable and include a service in our historic chapel if you so choose.
  • When someone is buried or cremated at Lakewood, their name is permanently preserved in our records, so they become a documented part of our community’s history.

Designed as a “garden” or “rural” cemetery, Lakewood is a 250-acre urban memorial park that has been carefully planned and developed since the 1870s. Within this lovely landscape, there are countless places to be returned to the earth. We also have a variety of beautiful areas where ashes can be scattered or preserved, so that you and your family will have a forever place to return to, not just an urn on a shelf.

Lakewood’s Memorial Chapel is an exquisite venue for funerals and celebration of life services for those who choose to be memorialized at Lakewood. This intimate historic space offers exceptional acoustics and unmatched beauty. Many families have created unique and moving programs incorporating readings, prayers, storytelling, music and more to honor the life that’s been lost. Bring us your ideas or ask about inspiring examples.

More than a sacred resting place… a place for celebration and life

There are many private ways to honor loved ones who have passed. But we also need collective ways to acknowledge loss and grief and life itself. Lakewood’s annual Lantern Lighting Celebration is an opportunity to gather with family, friends and others on Lakewood’s lovely grounds for a moving and meaningful experience. We also offer opportunities to come together on holidays like Mother’s Day and Memorial Day.

We invite you to discover all the meaningful ways you can be memorialized at Lakewood—and have a beautiful place for loved ones to gather, celebrate and remember for generations to come.  Come establish your own meaningful traditions.  Come celebrate and honor the full circle of life.

Go to lakewoodcemetery.org and explore the options. Or, better yet, call 612-822-2171 or come in and sit down with one of our family service advisors and tell us your priorities and wishes. We look forward to answering your questions and bringing ideas and inspiration to your plans.
