But when the creator of the Great Northern Railway turned his attention to the matter of legacy, he built a modern-day athenaeum to carry forth his memory. The James J. Hill Reference Library offers far more than a prized collection and magnificent architecture.

Hill opened his library in 1921. He wished for the public to see in its walls the strength of the pioneers, in its windows the light of knowledge, and in its collection each person’s potential to create something lasting and noble.

With its stately columns, distinctive marble and antique furnishings, the James J. Hill Reference Library’s ambiance will add unsurpassed elegance to your life’s celebration reception. The Library is available for rental seven days a week and can accommodate groups of up to 220 guests. The incomparably breathtaking Reading Room is perfect for a unique memorial reception, accommodating up to 220 guests in a sit down arrangement.

The James J. Hill Reference Library has been a living monument to “the Empire Builder,” James J. Hill, and a Saint Paul touchstone on picturesque Rice Park in the heart of downtown. After the life celebration, you and your guests have the opportunity to take a relaxing walk along the north bank of the Mississippi River or in St. Paul’s breathtaking Rice Park.
