Band of Praise represents the New Orleans jazz funeral tradition of RESPECT, HONOR and CELEBRATION here in Minnesota.

We’re available throughout the Twin Cities Metro and extended area.

NEW ORLEANS TRADITIONAL JAZZ FUNERAL

In a New Orleans jazz funeral, the band meets at the church or funeral parlor where the dismissal services are being conducted. After the service, the band leads a slow procession through to the cemetery. At the conclusion of their interment ceremony, the band leads a procession from the gravesite — solemn at first — but once reaching a respectful distance they break into spirited, joyous music, leading an exuberant procession of family, friends and other celebrants (the “second” line) back to the meeting hall for dancing and celebration.

BAND OF PRAISE CUSTOM JAZZ SERVICES

We adapt the New Orleans tradition to the needs and preferences of people (and the weather) in Minnesota, while remaining true to the spirit of job and celebration that it represents. We work with family of funeral planners to customize our music and participation to your wishes. We can lead a procession and play at the graveside in the old tradition, but most often we are asked to provide the traditional music as part of a memorial service, prior to our following burial or cremation.

MUSIC

Dirge & Hymns

Music of mourning and meditation, usually performed as part of a funeral or memorial service, or in the old tradition of accompanying casket to grave.

Examples:

• Just a Closer Walk with Thee
• Sweet Sweet Spirit

March & Second Line

Music of celebration usually performed at the close of a funeral or memorial service, or in the old tradition as a celebratory departure from the grave.

Examples:

• When the Saints Go Marching In
• Oh, Didn’t He Ramble

Other Dixieland/Blues

Music most often played prior to and following a memorial service. We have also prepared, upon request, special Dixieland arrangements of non-traditional songs that are meaningful to the family.

Examples:

• Traditional: Basin Street Blues, St. James Infirmary, Tailgate Ramble, Wabash Blues
• Non-traditional: Take Me Out the the Ballgame, Thank You for Being a Friend

FEES & PAYMENT

Band of Praise is comprised of 6-7 musicians, depending on the program, who are members of the American Federation of Musicians. Fees are quoted based on the requirements of the individuals booking. Payment in full, by cash or check, is required prior to the start of service.
